Raudraal, the Red Moon

The second of the three moons in Adnati's skies, both in distance from Adnati and in apparent size to the naked eye, is Raudraal, sometimes called the Red Moon.

Raudraal appears to have a diameter a quarter of Lunaal's. Sages know that this may be deceptive, as Lunaal is also clearly closer, since Lunaal eclipses Raudraal when their paths cross. It takes Raudraal 40 days to cycle from a new moon through the full moon and back to new. The ten-day week in the Common Calendar is based on one-quarter of Raudraal’s cycle.

Sages have long speculated whether Raudraal is desert-like, covered in red dust, or whether the red color comes from lava flows. It is generally acknowledged that Raudraal is not a ball of fire like Sola, the Sun.

Raudraal has a 40-day cycle of transitioning from a new moon to full and then back to new. A Standard Week on the Adnati calendar lasts ten days, which is believed to be derived from quartering the Raudraal cycle. The main parts of the cycle (new, full, and waxing and waning quarters) always land on Soladÿn, the first day of the Adnati week. In most years, Raudraal has nine full moons, but it has a tenth full moon every 20 years.

Raudraal doesn’t appear to have much influence over Adnati’s tides, though high tides tend to be a little higher when Lunaal and Raudraal are both full. This occurs once every 1,160 days, or every 3.2 years. Likewise, Raudraal doesn’t appear to affect most lycanthropes, though those lycans who can control their changes even during a full Lunaal moon have a harder time resisting changing when both Lunaal and Raudraal are full at the same time.

Both Raudraal and Caerudraal are full simultaneously only once every 3,080 days, or eight and a half years (specifically, 8.51 years). There are no known geophysical effects of this phenomenon, though many cultures celebrate the rare occurrence.

Many people, save for long-lived elves if they live a full lifespan, can go their entire lives without Lunaal, Raudraal, and Caerudraal all being full at the same time. Humans can go many generations without it happening, as it only occurs once every 89,320 days, or about 247 years. (Specifically, every 246.74 years.)

When this occurs, tides can get very high and epic storms are virtually inevitable somewhere on Adnati. Lycanthropes invariably turn, even if they generally have full control over their shapeshifting. It is said that women who conceive during one of these storms, or deliver a baby during one, will likely give birth to a child who can be a sorcerer or at least can pass down the sorcery ability in their blood to some of their descendants.
