Wondrous Item, Rare
Psychic Crystals are clear, crystalline gemstones that look like cut glass, though the inexperienced might mistake them for diamonds. They are typically around the size of a chicken’s egg but can be as small as a robin’s egg or as large as a turkey’s egg. They do not require attunement.
The crystal can store up to five charges of psychic energy, which can be used in the following ways:
- If the holder is of a class that uses sorcery points, you may expend one or more charges from the crystal instead of spending the same number of their own sorcery points.
- If the holder is of a class that uses Psionic Talent dice, such as a Soulknife Rogue or a Psi Warrior, they may expend a charge from the Psychic Crystal instead of expending their own Psionic Talent die.
- If the holder is required to roll a Psionic Talent die, they may use a charge from the crystal to do so, but the die roll will only be on a d6, regardless of the holder’s dice size.
- If the holder is inflicting psychic damage through the use of a spell, ability, or magical item, they may add an addition 1d6 psychic damage for every charge expended from the crystal.
Anyone holding the crystal can cause the crystal to glow in an effect similar to the light cantrip. The light is typically yellow candlelight but may be of any hue the person desires. This effect expends no charges and can be done even when the crystal has expended all of its charges. To activate this effect, the holder must concentrate on the crystal for one round (thus foregoing concentrating on any other spells at the same time). The light is activated if the user has Psionic Talent Dice or sorcery points, even if they are all currently expended, or if the user has the light cantrip available on their class’ spell list, even if they have never learned or prepared it.
The crystal does not automatically renew charges. Anyone holding the crystal who has an unexpended Psionic Talent die or unused sorcery points can expend a die or sorcery point to store the energy in the crystal. (Psionic Talent dice are stored as a d6 charge regardless of the size of the holder’s Psionic Talent dice.) In addition, a spellcaster with a spell that inflicts psychic damage or has any other psionic effect may cast it on the crystal to store it as a charge. Each spell is stored as a single charge. Charges are treated identically regardless of whether they were restored by spell or by Psionic Talent die, and regardless of the size of the die or spell slot.
Psychic Crystals do not require attunement. Anyone who holds a crystal who is able to use it (that is, anyone with a Psionic Talent die, sorcery points, or who is able to cast spells that inflict psychic damage) automatically knows how many charges it still has. Any attempt to store more than five charges wastes the Psionic Talent die, sorcery point, or spell slot without other effect.
Psychic Crystals may be used as an Arcane Focus by any spellcaster able to use a crystal as an Arcane Focus.
